A handful of factors explain most of the difference between a low bill and a high one. Here's what moves the needle most.

Air Conditioning

In Texas, cooling is usually the single biggest driver of electricity usage. Long, hot summers mean your AC can account for more than half of a summer bill.

My Home: A Real Example Of Why Usage Patterns Matter

Most websites rely on generic averages. Here's what electricity usage actually looks like in my own Texas home.

Instead of focusing on advertised rates, I start by looking at how electricity is actually used. Using my own Smart Meter Texas data, I compared two popular plan structures to see which one would cost less for my household.

While overnight EV charging contributes to that usage, it isn't the whole story. Like many families, a meaningful portion of our electricity consumption occurs during the evening and overnight hours when everyone is home.

Why It Fits My Household

My household consumes a meaningful amount of electricity during evening and overnight hours.

That includes EV charging, but it also reflects the reality of a busy family schedule where a significant portion of our electricity usage occurs later in the day.

Because approximately 35% of my annual electricity consumption occurs during Bright Nights hours, the plan aligns closely with how my household actually uses electricity.

  • Provides a monthly bill credit when usage exceeds 1,000 kWh
  • Rewards households that consistently fall within the target usage range

Why The Savings Are Limited

Gexa's bill-credit structure rewards customers who exceed 1,000 kWh per month.

My home qualifies for that credit virtually every month.

However, the credit amount remains fixed while my usage continues to increase. As consumption rises, the value of the bill credit becomes less impactful on a per-kWh basis.

In my case, the benefit of free overnight usage outweighs the value of the bill credit.

The Real Lesson

My home qualifies for Gexa's bill credit every month, yet Chariot still comes out approximately $1,258 cheaper per year because the plan aligns better with when my family actually uses electricity.

The lesson isn't that one plan is always better. It's that understanding how and when your household uses electricity can matter far more than simply choosing the lowest advertised rate.

Why Your Usage Matters When Choosing a Plan

The same electricity plan can produce dramatically different results depending on how much electricity you use and when you use it.

That's because most plans are built around specific usage assumptions. Two customers can choose the exact same plan and experience very different realized rates.

Bill-Credit Plans

Built around usage thresholds. You only earn the credit when usage crosses a set amount (often 1,000 kWh). Land below it and the advertised savings disappear.

Time-of-Use Plans

Reward specific consumption patterns. Free or discounted windows — like overnight — only create savings if a meaningful share of your usage falls inside them.

Fixed-Rate Plans

The most predictable option. You pay the same rate per kWh regardless of how much or when you use it — simpler, with fewer surprises.
